A Geisha - Movie

In the post-war Gion district of Kyoto, the geisha Miyoharu agrees to apprentice the 16 year-old Eiko. The story follows the difficult life of Eiko as she and her mentor battle the social pressures of postwar Japan. For the geisha community, the period after World War II was a time of conflict between pre-war traditionalism with a new atmosphere of individual liberty and women’s rights. The film is as much about the social revolution taking place in 1953 occupied Japan as it is about the emotional relationship between the two women.
